Redemption Year

Mardi Gras

Dear Diary,

It’s the day before I am relaunching The World to Run. In the posts to come I share a bit about what happened in the months since the Nashville Marathon last year, distractions that kept me from writing about it, and what the purpose for restarting it is.

I picked tomorrow to restart because I love the power of a new month. Similar to a new day, it’s a time where I take a step back to reflect on the past month and set goals for the next one to come.

As I write to you on February 28th, I can’t help but smile about the alignment of calendars. Today is Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, where among other festivities, many people celebrate with big feasts or parties before fasting or honoring different religious obligations associated with Lent. Now, I’m not a religious person for my own reasons but as a kid I always attempted a 40 day challenge of self-improvement while my more religious friends celebrated Lent with their families.

So today is a chance to celebrate all the work and miles that have gotten me this far and to look ahead at the horizon for what comes next. Tomorrow I am back to work running, writing, and, hopefully, inspiring others to also lace up and go for a jog.

Happy Mardi Gras, everyone. Cheers to a new challenge!
